The first on line meetings with the working groups involved in TANGRAM project, where Monza play a lead partner role, were held In the start of October.

Starting from the opening meeting on the 6th of October a large, interested and active participation of the members has been pointed out which it was confirmed also in the following meetings.

The Deputy of Monza Municipality Mr Pierfrancesco Maffè opened the meeting with greetings from the local administration and a description of the activities which have been settled during the decades within the Park.

The participants introduced themselves and their interests in the project.

The facilitators described the methodology that will be applied for achieving the goals above: the European Awareness Scenario Workshop (EASW) will be applied. This methodology is based on the involvement of stakeholders in a participative process aimed at the identification of the most wished long-term scenario.

At the end of the presentation a review of the problems and of the positive values of the Park was done.

For a clear understanding of the implementation process of this part of the TANGRAM project, a brief description of the history of the Park of the Royal Palace of Monza is necessary. Its story dates back to the first years of 19th century. It was built according to Napoleon Bonaparte’s will and designed by Luigi Canonica, the French court’s official architect, who connected it to the Gardens of the Royal Palace, constructed in 1777 thanks to Maria Theresa of Austria.

Planning how the Park will be at the end of this decade is the key result of EASW methodology. In fact, the outcome and the quality of the final results of the whole project depend on the accuracy and plausibility of the futures that will be outlined.

To maximise the accuracy and the plausibility we proceeded in two stages:

During the first stage an open debate on problems and values expressed by the Park took place. The discussion:

  • outlined from the beginning the extreme scenarios in which probably the future of the Park will develop
  • highlighted the values and the functions that the Park carries out at different levels (cultural, natural, recreational, ecological, green urban area, etc.)

The most relevant topics arisen during a debate rich in inspiration were following:

  • The loss of identity of the Park is the major problem, because, as it continues over time, it causes a growing loss of awareness in the community about its historical and cultural value. This way, even the overall entirety of the Villa and the Park will get lost
  • Always with regards to the topic of the identity, it must be noticed that the theme of the landscape is regularly overlooked. Instead, at the birth of the Park this was a key point

During the second stage a questionnaire was prepared on the basis of the information collected during the debate. The questionnaire put four questions about the services/values of the Park and asked to identify in a range between 1 and 10 the values/services which have been best preserved or those that will be most damaged in the next ten years.

The results of the interviews were discussed during the second round of the meetings lead by the single professional groups. Their results are the object of the next meetings.
